Expertise

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My primary research interests currently centre on the following themes:

European integration

Government and parliament adaptation to the EU, Europeanisation, EU legitimacy

Britain's EU membership

UK government policy on the EU, UK-EU relations, Europe in national politics, UK scrutiny of EU legislation, EU perceptions of Britain

UK devolution politics

Constitutional reform, political asymmetries, Scotland in UK and European contexts

Further interests include comparative politics, territorial politics, political theories of decision-making, public policy, legitimacy and international institutions. I am also interested in the relationship between UK politics and US politics.

Much of my studies and early work has focused on EU politics and law, so my theoretical background comes in large part out of European Union studies. I am most interested in sociological institutionalism and, by extension, territorial institutionalism. I am also influenced by historical institutionalism and ideas of multi-level governance.
